What is it About?
The Government is committed to raising standards in our schools, and achieving a better work/life balance for teachers and other school employees.
At the heart of the remodelling programme is a fundamental belief that deep-seated change can and does occur. What it requires are new attitudes and behaviours, new beliefs and values, and new skills and capabilities to be created and, importantly, sustained.
Remodelling
Remodelling is different from other school initiatives. In fact, rather than being just one initiative, it's the glue that binds the others together. Remodelling:
- Is a self-directed approach that places the school in control of its own change agenda.
- Recognises that schools must formulate unique solutions to common problems - one size doesn't fit all.
- Relies on the involvement and participation of the entire school community
- Revolves around a change process that is a tried-and-tested way of managing change in schools.
- Is underpinned by a wide network of support involving LEAs and the Consortium.
Understanding and managing change is a key part of the school remodelling process. It can often prove to be the most difficult part. Rather than just being instructions to be carried out, the change process involves a fundamental alteration in mindset.
This website will provide you with the information on remodelling and the change process.
Our Change Process
The first priority for schools is implementing the National Agreement.
To guide schools in their remodelling, we are promoting a change process based on the techniques and experience we've gained in both the business and education worlds, and tried so successfully with our pilot schools.
School Change Teams and collaboration are two of five key elements we recommend in successful remodelling.
Whilst schools will find their own solutions to particular problems, there are some key common aims of remodelling. Below are some examples of what you might, and should, expect to see in your school after going through the remodelling process:
- Teaching and learning is the main focus.
- The workforce is involved in making decisions.
- Tasks and activities are undertaken by the appropriate people within flexible working patterns.
- Managing change is a normal part of school life.
- The school shares experiences and learning with other schools.
- The work/life balance is acceptable to the whole workforce.
- All workforce and other stakeholders are aware of the direction of the school.
