Focus: Promoting the emotional literacy of socially deprived pupils across the family of schools through a programme of communication enrichment, and through the development of a methodology based on the child-centred philosophy for learning framework

Case study: Milford Haven and Pembrokeshire Schools led by Hakin Junior School (Pembrokeshire)
Focus: The overall theme of this project is emotional well being and building innovative approaches to emotional literacy through both curriculum development and pastoral programmes. It involves 5 networks of projects:

  1. Tackling the impact of disadvantage on pupil progress in language development affected by limited opportunities for pupils to develop their written skills, which impacts on the key skill of communication across all areas.
  2. Social and emotional development and the impact of deprivation on the development of emotional intelligence.
  3. To address motivation and engagement in learning through curriculum enrichment, thus overcoming disengagement with the existing curriculum.
  4. The reluctance of parents and families to engage with schools and children’s learning and the need to build appropriate partnerships to achieve this.
  5. The enhanced need for learning and pastoral support for pupils from disadvantaged home settings to address social and emotional development.
